The Port of Antwerp-Bruges continues to deepen its strategic partnership with India, recognizing the country as a crucial trading partner and a rapidly growing economy. In March 2025, a delegation from the port participated in the Belgian Economic Mission to India, engaging in multiple high-profile events organized by Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT). The delegation attended the Flanders India Hydrogen and Ports Round Table, visited Larsen and Toubro’s facilities, and held discussions on industrial decarbonization and global hydrogen supply chains.

India’s Trade with Antwerp-Bruges Sees Significant Growth

Trade between India and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has witnessed substantial growth, with India’s import volumes through the port increasing by over 22% in the past year. The port’s automotive hub in Bruges positions it as a key partner for India’s expanding automotive industry, ensuring seamless supply chain operations and logistics. Meanwhile, Antwerp’s chemical hub aligns with India’s pharmaceutical production, reinforcing collaboration between two vital industrial sectors. Moreover, India’s commitment to renewable energy complements the port’s sustainability efforts, further enhancing trade and investment opportunities.

Strengthening Industrial and Technological Collaboration

In November 2024, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges organized a comprehensive roadshow across three major Indian cities. New Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. Led by Vice President Luc Arnouts, the delegation included representatives from seven companies within the port community. Aiming to deepen relationships with Indian industry leaders. The roadshow explored collaboration opportunities across various industries. Including logistics, automotive manufacturing, and chemical production, fostering stronger economic engagement between India and Belgium.

Fostering Knowledge Exchange and Training Programs

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges actively promotes knowledge exchange through specialized training programs. Ensuring industry professionals acquire the necessary skills for port management and logistics. Since 1977, the Antwerp/Flanders Port Training Center (APEC) has offered courses in port strategy, logistics, and sustainable operations. In partnership with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), APEC established the ‘JNPA-Antwerp Port. Training and Consultancy Foundation. to provide tailored training programs for Indian port professionals. This initiative equips India’s port workforce with advanced technical expertise, strengthening the country’s maritime capabilities.

Collaborating with Indian Institutions for Sustainable Port Development

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges International actively collaborates with leading Indian institutions to drive sustainable port development and innovation. Working closely with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Kolkata. The port supports infrastructure projects that align with India’s long-term maritime vision. These partnerships contribute to the goals outlined in the Maritime Indian Vision 2030-2047. Emphasizing technological advancements, green energy initiatives, and enhanced trade facilitation. By leveraging these collaborations, India and Belgium continue to strengthen their economic and strategic ties.

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges remains committed to fostering economic growth, sustainability, and technological progress in its engagement with India. Through increasing trade volumes, collaborative initiatives, and knowledge-sharing programs. The port continues to play a pivotal role in India’s industrial and logistical advancement. As India accelerates its focus on renewable energy and infrastructure development. This strategic partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities for mutual economic prosperity.
