The Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR) has partnered with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to establish the CONCOR–TERI Centre of Excellence for Green and Sustainable Logistics. This initiative aims to promote sustainable logistics practices by focusing on green freight transportation, eco-friendly warehousing, and innovative logistics solutions.
Key Objectives of the Centre
The newly established Centre will conduct extensive research and develop policies to enhance sustainability in rail transportation, terminal operations, warehousing, and storage management. Moreover, it will work towards greening built infrastructure while ensuring compliance with various environmental laws and regulations. This initiative aligns with India’s National Logistics Policy, which aims to reduce logistics costs from 14% to 8% of GDP by 2047.
Sanjay Swarup Highlights CONCOR’s Sustainability Commitment
During the MoU signing ceremony, Sanjay Swarup, Chairman and Managing Director of CONCOR, reiterated the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. He emphasized that 95% of CONCOR’s cargo transportation relies on rail, which remains one of the most sustainable modes of transport. Additionally, the company is taking proactive measures by deploying 130 LNG-powered trailers for first-mile and last-mile delivery services.
Expanding Green Infrastructure and Renewable Energy Use
In further efforts to minimize emissions, CONCOR has started implementing electric vehicles for intra-terminal operations, ensuring a lower carbon footprint across its logistics network. Moreover, the company is constructing India’s first net-zero warehouse, a massive 130,000-square-foot facility in Sriperumbudur. This project underscores CONCOR’s dedication to sustainable infrastructure development and renewable energy integration.
Solar Energy Integration and Green Terminals
To strengthen its sustainability initiatives, CONCOR is integrating solar panels at its terminals, reducing reliance on conventional power sources and lowering overall operational costs. By embracing renewable energy solutions, the company demonstrates its unwavering commitment to promoting green logistics across India’s supply chain industry.
Dr. Vibha Dhawan Stresses the Importance of Collaboration
Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, highlighted the significance of developing practical solutions that optimize logistics operations while reducing carbon emissions and overall costs. She emphasized that this collaboration between TERI and CONCOR showcases the synergy between sustainability and logistics, ensuring that environmental responsibility aligns with economic growth.
A Step Toward a Sustainable Logistics Future
The establishment of the Centre of Excellence represents a major milestone in India’s journey toward a more sustainable logistics sector. Through research, policy development, and industry collaboration, this initiative will create a more efficient and environmentally friendly logistics ecosystem. Furthermore, it will benefit key stakeholders, industries, and policymakers who are striving to make logistics operations greener and more cost-effective.
Driving the Green Logistics Revolution in India
By implementing eco-friendly transportation solutions and investing in green infrastructure, CONCOR and TERI are pioneering a revolution in sustainable logistics. Their joint efforts will contribute to reducing India’s carbon footprint while making the logistics sector more efficient, cost-effective, and resilient to future challenges. This partnership sets a precedent for other companies to adopt sustainable logistics practices, ultimately leading to a cleaner and greener future for India’s economy.
